Who We've Helped

Murdoch Community Services

If your garden needs some TLC, then you need to call the Murdoch Community Services (MCS) gardening teams!

The MCS Garden Service team, in the rural area of St. Arnaud in Victoria, is now the proud owner of two Honda lawnmowers, a Honda leaf-blower and Honda line-trimmer, thanks to a generous donation from The Honda Foundation and Innes Motors Honda in Bendigo.

The Honda equipment was purchased from local businessman Barry Macklin, who will also maintain and service the team’s equipment.

Established in 1972, MCS provides quality services to people with disabilities, including supported employment programs, facility-based respite, Outreach and Day Services as well as the delivery of individualised support packages.

The organisation’s Garden Services teams provide lawn mowing, weeding and general garden maintenance services to over 140 customers in and around St. Arnaud. Each team comprises one supervisor and up to five supported employees, the majority of whom have an intellectual disability

Ms. Eril Sherwell, Coordinator of the MCS Garden Service said, “Over the past 11 years, Honda mowers have proven to be the most reliable and well able to meet our needs at the Garden Service. The introduction of “Easy Start” (the pull cord) to the Honda range, means the mowers are terrific for people with disabilities, especially those who are physically impaired.

“The new line-trimmer we purchased has also been a great asset to our second gardening team, with the workers commenting on its ease of operation,” Ms. Sherwell said.

Nancy McColl Bowen, CEO of Murdoch Community Services says the additional equipment has meant the busy Garden Service teams can better meet customer demand. “The Honda Foundation’s generous donation has allowed MCS to expand our garden service, so we now have two full teams of workers and equipment. Our customers are pleased we can respond to their requests more quickly, and our supported employees are delighted to work more hours each week, earning more money and experiencing real job satisfaction. It’s a win-win for everyone!”
