Mount Evelyn Special Developmental School (SDS) is a leading specialist school supporting children of all abilities to reach their full potential. The school provides a modified curriculum for 130 students with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities. |
Located on 3.2 hectares of landscaped gardens in the outer eastern metropolitan area of Melbourne, the school seeks to provide a positive culture of life long learning and personal development to meet the complex learning needs of students. The school’s facilities include adventure playgrounds, fitness tracks, recreation and play areas, and a hydrotherapy pool.
Student ages range from 3 to18 years, with the school offering Early Education, Primary, Secondary and Vocational Pathways. Teachers work closely with each student’s family to provide programs that teach the skills and values to allow each child to reach their full potential.
During Primary School individual learning plans are developed for each student in the learning areas of English, Maths, the Arts, Health and Physical Education, and interpersonal skill development. The enriched curriculum includes specialist arts programs, swimming and hydrotherapy, outdoor excursions and community activities. Individual education programs are provided to enhance student learning opportunities, with therapists working closely with teaching staff to provide physiotherapy, occupational therapy, music and speech therapy classes.
As students progress through the school they are encouraged and supported to take greater responsibility for their own learning and participation at school. Students explore how learning is applied in work, recreation, the classroom and in community settings. The curriculum is designed to equip senior students with learning opportunities and strategies to enhance their own social, emotional and physical wellbeing. During the final two years of schooling students participate in the Vocational Pathways curriculum.
In the last year of school, students and parents are supported and guided through the Futures for Young Adults program to make the transition to post school options. A particular focus of the school is to support students to initiate, maintain and manage positive social relationships with a range of people in a variety of contexts.
